Embracing Interior Design
8 Reasons Interior Design is important
If you have ever walked into a room and been ‘struck’ by its beauty, then you are not oblivious to the power of Interior Design. Not too long ago, beautifully curated interiors were a ‘reserve’ of the elite in society and the lucky few blessed with artistic flair. As more people are understanding how it impacts them, they are ‘demanding’ better designed spaces from public and commercial establishments. The places where it’s finding application and being enjoyed is quickly expanding. Individuals are also going to great length to create well thought-out private spaces, proving that Interior Design is not unnecessary or superficial, but can be enjoyed by all regardless of budgets. Albert Hadley – a re-known American Interior Designer and Decorator – once noted, “The essence of Interior Design will always be about people and how they live.” Take people out of the equation and you’ve just removed, the core – ‘the why?’ So, let’s talk about it. Why is this something everyone should consider for their interiors?
1. Beauty
It is said that human beings have a natural tendency towards visual and moral beauty. The most obvious and sought for outcome of Interior Design is the aesthetic value it brings to any space. If this were its’ only benefit, it would without doubt be more than enough, because of the joy and satisfaction it elicits. In working on a space an Interior Designer approaches their task much like a musician would a composition, or an artist a painting. Many elements must come together to transform a ‘run-of-the-mill’, mundane space into a scenic, serene habitation. It’s no wonder that some are moved to tears by their new spaces. Interior Design uses both art and science to create aesthetically sound interiors for us to enjoy.
2. Better Life
More often than not, the transformation that Interior Design brings to a space tends to spill into other areas of one’s life. The order, calm, clarity of mind, focus, increased productivity that comes from having an aesthetically pleasing, efficient, optimal space leads to an enhanced quality of life that has been life-changing for some.
3. Efficiency
By understanding how a space is to be used then providing solutions that bring order and maximize function, Interior Design is able to bring about greater efficiency. It could be as simple as tidying up a room and introducing baskets or shelves to contain things, or a more demanding solution such as pulling down whole walls to rearrange layouts. The aim is always to improve how a space functions so that work is done much easier, faster and more effectively.
4. Increased Productivity
If you wish to increase your productivity whether as a group or an individual, paying attention to your surroundings is a great place to start and crucial to accomplishing your goal. This is because conducive environments make for happy motivated individuals who perform at their peak. Interior Design offers solutions that provide well planned, well organized surroundings that allow people to focus on their work resulting in increased output.
5. Mental Wellness
Mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression and others are caused when our environment gets out of balance or by overwhelm, as a result of the trials and uncertainties of life. Interior Design has long been used to promote mental wellness because it understands that our surroundings greatly impact our mood. It is impossible to stay in a charged, cluttered, disorganized place for long without feeling anxious and on edge. ‘Getting away’ is usually our instinctive response to stress filled environments. It is our chance to steal away to sunsets, beaches, mountains, forest or parks. Nature generally has a calming, recharging effect on humans, allowing us to rest, reset and then come back with creative solutions. This is what Interior Design mimics. Through the use of tools and principles such as colour, harmony, symmetry and others, inspiring, healing environments are created that in turn promote creativity and productivity. These sanctuaries become the ‘getaway’ or break that we need to have the mental presence required to think and figure out solutions to the everyday challenges that we face instead of being overwhelmed by them.
6. Optimizing
One of the questions an Interior Designer might ask themselves when working on a space is: “How can it do more?” This is about identifying its’ best and most usefulness, then designing a solution that optimizes it. The answer to that question often results in underutilized or overlooked areas being suddenly ‘put-to-work’ while others are made to do double or triple-duty. The end result may give the impression that more space was manufactured when in fact, better planning and creativity opened up the full potential of this space.
7. Personalizing and Customization
Interior Design has the ability to give ‘a soul’ to an otherwise empty space. It presents an opportunity to express and reflect ones’ personality, values and individuality in their surroundings. One room can be put together in a myriad of ways, it can be as eccentric or as conservative as the curator wishes. The thousands of images available on the “world wide web” are an endless source of inspiration and should challenge, not kill creativity. These diverse ideas should be the catalysts that we need and that we adopt or modify in an effort to develop a style relevant to our home, environment and way of life, rather than become templates for reproduction. In this way the potential to create becomes limitless.
8. Update
Interior Design provides solutions for the spaces we live and work in. Whether it is maintenance, renovation, a quick upgrade or new construction the solutions applied will automatically increase the value of your home or office. Additionally, a better looking space boosts the confidence of those who live there in much the same way that being well dressed and well groomed boosts an individual’s confidence.
Interior Design really is about people, the places they live or work and making the most of their spaces. By using creativity, technology, different material among other tools, it provides solutions that lead to an improved quality of life.
